Pre-K
Pre-K at Grain, and the state's program
Grain takes part in the state's pre-K program for four-year-olds. Ask us how it works with our tuition; the answer depends on the school day your family chooses.
The paperwork is the part families dread, so we do it together. Bring the papers to a tour and the director sits with you for the forms.

The paperwork
What to bring, and what we do with it
Step 1: Proof of age
Your child's birth certificate, or another record that shows the date of birth. We copy it and hand it back.
The original or a copy
We check it at the tour
Step 2: Proof of address
A recent utility bill or lease with your name and street. The state program asks where you live.
Dated within the last two months
A lease works if the bills aren't in your name
Step 3: Immunization record
Your child's doctor can print it. We keep a copy in the enrollment file.
Ask the doctor's office for a printout
Bring it along even if it's not up to date; we'll talk it through
Step 4: Pickup list
The adults who may collect your child, with their phone numbers. We ask for ID at the door until we know everyone.
Two to four names is typical
You can change the list any time
Step 5: State pre-K application
Families apply for the state program through the school district. We sit with you at the tour and fill it in together.
We bring the form and a pen
The director checks it over with you before you send it
Step 6: Our enrollment forms
The rest are our own enrollment forms, and the director goes through them with you. Medical details go on them, privately, once you enroll.
Done on a phone or a computer
You can finish them at home
After pre-K
From pre-K to kindergarten
Every child moves at their own pace. Here is how we walk with your family through the spring.
A talk in the winter
Your child's teacher talks with you about the year so far, in plain words.
Choosing a school
We help you find the elementary school's enrollment dates and what it asks for.
A hand-off, if you'd like one
If you ask us to, we share what we've seen with the kindergarten teacher.
A last visit
In May, the class walks over to look at a kindergarten room, with their teachers beside them.

Questions about the state pre-K program
Who can start pre-K?
Children who are four by the start of the school year. If your child's birthday is close, ask us at the tour and we'll look at it with you.
Do we apply to Grain or to the school district?
Both. The state program's application goes through the school district, and ours is our own enrollment form. We help with each, side by side, at the tour.
How does the state program work with Grain's tuition?
We take part in the state's pre-K program. How it fits with our tuition depends on the schedule you choose, and the director walks through it with you at the tour.
What if we miss the paperwork month?
Call us. Places open up through the year, and we keep a waitlist in the order families joined.
Bring the papers to a tour
We'll fill in the forms together, and you can ask us anything about the year.
